1. Eligibility: The Malibu Beach Internship is open to U.S. citizens age 21 and over, with a valid U.S. passport. Determination of whether an individual qualifies for this position shall be under the supervision of The Thomas Collective Public Relations (Reviewing Organization). By applying for the position, all applicants consent to the use of their names/likenesses in all forms of media for advertising and promotional purposes without additional compensation, except where prohibited by law. By applying, applicants agree to abide by and be bound by these requirements. All Applications, photos, images and videos submitted become the sole property of Pernod Ricard USA, LLC (Employer) and will not be returned.
2. To apply, each applicant must submit a completed Application. Applications must be received no later than August 31, 2009 at 11:59:59 pm EST. Only one Application per individual. All Applications, including any corresponding photos, images and/or video become Employer’s property. Employer is not responsible for delays or failures in transmission of online Applications. No correspondence will be acknowledged. Twenty (20) selected finalists will be notified on or before September 7, 2009 and must be available to conduct a phone interview with the Reviewing Organization and Expert Panel for final round of judging on September 14, 2009. Failure to participate in the September 14th phone interview will result in disqualification. The ten (10) selected internship recipients will be announced on September 28, 2009, must sign and return all required documents by October 3, 2009 and be available to travel outside of the U.S. between October 15, 2009 and November 15, 2009 for at least ten days.
3. Each applicant must complete an Application Questionnaire which includes a 500 word writing composition where applicants must answer the following questions: 1) Why should Malibu and Reef Check choose you? 2) What motivates you to positively impact your community? 3) How would you spread the word about reef protection? 4) What makes you qualified to become a beach intern? In addition to the Application Questionnaire and writing composition, applicants must also provide creative examples that answer the following questions: 1) How do you engage your world? 2) What are you passionate about? 3) How do you get your island on? Inclusion of photos, images and video are not required but highly encouraged (maximum upload total should not exceed 20mb). The persuasiveness of the Application is one of the criteria reviewed, and it is your opportunity to describe your qualifications, background and/or unique experiences.
4. The Malibu Beach Internship is defined as follows: It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get your island on while giving back. Selected interns will be taken on a ten-day adventure and learning opportunity to explore the coast of Thailand, the Maldives or the Philippines in order to preserve and promote awareness of the country’s coral reef ecosystems (valued at approximately $3,000 USD). It is your responsibility to convey in your Application your passion to experience this once-in-a-lifetime adventure and the qualities that you possess to achieve this goal and effectively perform the duties of the internship.
5. If selected, interns must agree not to defame or disparage any of Employer’s products, and act in accordance with the requirements of the position.
6. Obtaining passports, visas and meeting other travel requirements will be the sole responsibility of the interns.
7. Application Review: Decision of Reviewing Organization is final in all matters relating to this position, pursuant to review by Employer. All Application review will be under the supervision of the Reviewing Organization. Applications will be reviewed on criteria weighted as follows: (1) 20% - Application, (2) 30% - Persuasiveness of written composition (3) 30% - Creativity of upload submissions (4) 20% - Sphere of influence/ability to positively impact community. The top 20 applicants will be notified by phone on or before September 7, 2009. These individuals will be required to conduct a phone interview with Reviewing Organization and Expert Panel for final round judging on September 14, 2009. The Reviewing Organization and Expert Panel will apply the same criteria weighted as above in selecting the interns. Internship recipients will be announced on September 28, 2009. Applicants selected for the internship must sign and return any required contract, affidavit, Release of Liability and Publicity Consent forms by October 3, 2009. Non-compliance within this time period will result in disqualification and alternate applicants may be selected. Any applicant notification returned to Employer as undeliverable would result in disqualification of applicant, and the selection of alternate grantees would commence. Any content deemed inappropriate will disqualify the applicant without notification. Each applicant may apply only once. All Application content, including any images, photos and/or video becomes the sole property of Employer and may be used for broadcast and promotional purposes in perpetuity including but not limited to the posting of applicants’ images, photos and/or videos onto Malibu’s social networking sites. Please note that incomplete Applications will not be accepted.
8. Release: Should the applicants be chosen, the individuals will not be confirmed as interns until the Consulting Agreement, Release of Liability and Publicity Consent forms supplied by Employer have been signed by the applicants and received by the granting party. The Final Contract will bind the grantees to the duties as set forth in the agreement. The Publicity Consent form will authorize to use the applicants’ likenesses, names, biographies and essays for purposes of advertising and trade.
9. Internship Assignments: Selected internship recipients must agree to participate in the following activities during their stay in Thailand, the Maldives or the Philippines:
a. Reef Check survey training: A combination of lectures and both land and water based practice surveys. Training will be comprehensive, covering all tasks, duties and procedures needed to conduct surveys safely and efficiently. Interns will be given a test at the end of the training and prior to the first survey to assure that they meet minimum standards for species identification and data collection. Those who do not meet these standards will receive additional training.
b. SCUBA certification and/or snorkeling: Activities will include both SCUBA diving and snorkeling, although interns will not be required to participate on SCUBA dives. All interns must be able to swim 200 meters/ 700 feet unaided by floatation devices or fins. SCUBA certification will be available for those who are interested, although interns are not required to become SCUBA certified or have been certified prior to the internship.
Below are the expected physical demands of the internship, but please keep in mind that conditions may change and could potentially be more or less strenuous than the chart indicates:

Additionally, selected interns may be involved within the judging process next year as part of the 2010 Malibu Beach Internship judging panel.
